If you are an educator or work with a career center, we want you to know more about the career opportunities available in our $30 billion industry.

Surplus lines is the segment of the insurance industry that provides protection for high-risk businesses and individuals, as well as those that require “excess” insurance. For example, a developer building in a hurricane-prone area or a transportation company hauling hazardous fuels would need extra coverage.

Positions Available
Young people can find jobs in firms that help to “broker” insurance coverage or with those that provide the actual coverage. Wholesale Broker positions typically require skills in marketing, sales and account service – providing a chance for travel and direct contact with customers. Underwriting jobs require creative thought processes, research, analysis and an ability to analyze a problem and develop solutions. Underwriters are the people who help to solve the insurance problem and who provide brokers with the insurance “product” to market to individuals and businesses.

The National Association of Professional Surplus Lines Offices (NAPSLO) is seeking to educate both you and young people on the benefits this industry offers as a career choice. These include:

An entrepreneurial and creative workplace environment and culture

  • Ability to put their passion to work in a highly dynamic, competitive industry
  • Chance for performance-based advancement based on ability – not years of experience
  • Competitive compensation and benefits packages

We are not just looking for students majoring in insurance. Those with backgrounds in marketing, finance, technology, business, HR and other majors also have the skills and backgrounds our members need.

Where the Jobs Are
Businesses within our industry are located in both major cities and smaller markets in the U.S. as well as Europe. NAPSLO members range in size from 10 to 1000+ employees and tend to be highly entrepreneurial. Young people can advance quickly – based on accomplishments– not just years of experience. Compensation is very competitive and very often performance based.  Some wholesale brokers make six figures within a few years of graduating.
