Third group receives ASLI designations in New York

The third group of ASLI designations were conferred during the 1999 NAPSLO Annual Convention in October with 85 people receiving the designation.

Overall 351 people have received the designation since it was first awarded in 1997. The first ASLI 161 exam was administered in December 1996, the first ASLI 162 exam was administered in May 1997, and the first designations conferred at the 1997 NAPSLO Annual Convention.

"The designation has become an important symbol of a person's commitment to the industry and we are glad to see the continued interest," said Foundation President Joe Timmons.

Another large group may receive the ASLI designation in 2000 as of December 1999 there were 94 people taking the ASLI 161 exams and 64 taking the ASLI 162 exams.

In the future it will be easier for students to complete the designation as both ASLI exams will be converted to multiple choice exams and will be then administered on computer at Sylvan Technology Centers starting in May 2001. Currently the exams are only offered twice a year, May 2000 and January 2001.

Starting in May 2001, exams will be offered daily during four one-month windows throughout the year. Students will be able to go to local Sylvan Centers during preset time periods and take the exams at their options.

ASLI Exams will be offered Feb. 15 - March 15; May 15 - June 15; Aug. 15 - Sept. 15; and Nov. 15 - Dec. 15.

In addition to providing students with continuing education on surplus lines, ASLI 161 and 162 are each approved for continuing education credit in 40 states.

The Foundation and the Insurance Institute of America, which oversees the ASLI program, are currently updating the textbooks for both courses. The revised ASLI 161 text should be available in December 2000 and the ASLI 162 is currently under revision.

The Foundation is also working with the NAPSLO Education Committee to promote the ASLI to individuals attending the NAPSLO E&S School and Advanced School.
