Foundation to offer additional scholarships
Two new scholarship opportunities are expected to be offered by the Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation in 2002.
The first, the Herbert W. Kaufman Scholarships, recognizes the founder of Burns & Wilcox, Ltd. of Farmington, Mich. Mr. Kaufman passed away in August and two scholarships were established through contributions of Burns & Wilcox employees, as well as a number of industry firms.
The second scholarship will help family members of insurance professionals lost in the September 11 terrorist attacks.
The Foundation Board of Directors voted to direct funds raised at the 2002 Foundation Golf Invitational in February in San Antonio to establish a September 11 Scholarship to assist family members of insurance professionals killed in the attacks. Details of the program are being developed.
The additional scholarships will increase the 10 $2,000 scholarships awarded annually by three.
The deadline to submit a completed application, school transcript and two letters of recommendation is June 1.
The scholarship program was developed to further the study of insurance and encourage, support, and reward those exceptional students who have an interest in an insurance career. To date, more than 30 scholarships have been awarded.
The scholarship program was originally established through a donation by Scottsdale Insurance Company in recognition of its founder, Rolland L. Wiegers.
Since then additional funds have been donated to the Foundation, helping fund other scholarships.
Except for the September 11 scholarship, applicants must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree program majoring in Actuarial Science, Business, Economics, Finance, Insurance, Management, Marketing, Risk Management or Statistics. Students also must maintain a GPA of 3.0.
