College symposiums introduce industry to insurance students
Students at Troy State University and Olivet College got a first hand look at the surplus lines industry, thanks to symposiums partially funded by the Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation.
In the fall of 2003 Troy State and Olivet put on symposiums which promoted surplus lines and highlighted opportunities in the industry.
In November, Dr. Carol Jordan, Eminent Scholar of Risk Management & Insurance at Troy State, hosted the program The Excess and Surplus Lines Symposium. In late September Professor Michael R. Hubbel of Olivet College hosted The Extreme Risk Takers.
The Troy State program included a presentation from Deputy Commissioner Johnny Johnson of the Alabama Department of Insurance, representatives of Lloyd's, NAPSLO, Delta Airlines, and several NAPSLO member firms.
The Olivet program included presentations by NAPSLO's Founder, Charles McAlear, and representatives of Lloyd's, NAPSLO, and several NAPSLO member firms.
This was the ninth year Dr. Jordan had organized a symposium and fourth year that the Foundation has been a sponsor. This was the first year Olivet has hosted a symposium and received assistance from the Foundation.
In addition to providing information on the surplus lines industry, the symposiums also outlined career opportunities, including NAPSLO Internship program.
