NAPSLO Industry Award presented to Anthony Markel

Anthony Markel, President and COO of Markel CorporationGlen Allen, Va., was honored at the 2005 NAPSLO Annual Convention for his contributions to the surplus lines insurance industry and was presented the Charles A. McAlear/NAPSLO Industry Award.

NAPSLO President Richard Polizzi presented Mr. Markel the Industry Award on September 16 at the convention in San Francisco for Mr. Markel’s work as a President of the Association and also for his involvement in the industry.

“In an era of corporate ownership, it is refreshing to be able to tie a name to a firm, and there’s no doubt that when anyone talks about the Markel Corporation, the first person they think of is Tony Markel,” Mr. Polizzi said.

Mr. Markel served as NAPSLO president from 1982-83 representing Markel Service, Inc. During his term as president, NAPSLO instituted the Association’s annual Committee Day, he was the first NAPSLO President to lead the Association after companies became voting members, and the NAPSLO Board of Directors was expanded to include representatives of company members as directors.

“In addition to his work with NAPSLO, Tony has been a leader of the E&S business and has made a great impact on the industry by being involved and speaking out on issues ranging from business to legislation to technology,” Mr. Polizzi said.

NAPSLO established the Industry Award in the 1980s to honor those who have made significant contributions to the industry. The award was renamed the Charles A. McAlear/NAPSLO Industry Award in 1994 to recognize Mr. McAlear, the first president of NAPSLO.

Also honored at the NAPSLO Annual Convention were:

Bob R. McFall, McFall General Agency, Inc. of Portland, Ore., who received the President’s Award from Mr. Polizzi for his outstanding work as chair of the School Advisory Committee. Mr. McFall served on the NAPSLO Board of Directors from 1999-2005 and served as chair of the School Advisory Committee from 2004-05. Previously he served as a co-chair of the Education Committee.

Marti Dickinson, All Risks, Ltd., Hunt Valley, Md., and a member of the NAPSLO Internship Committee, and Mark Wells, Jr., a member of the NAPSLO Communications and Technology Committee, and publisher of the Insurance Journal magazine, San Diego, Calif., were presented the Dana Roehrig (Past President’s) Award, given to outstanding committee members. Past President H. James Griffith presented the awards.
