September 1, 2000 - Former Senator Bob Dole will make the third annual Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation Lecture Series presentation on Friday, September 15 at the annual convention of the National Association of Professional Surplus Lines Offices (NAPSLO).
More than 2,000 delegates are expected to attend the members only convention set for September 13-17, 2000 at the Hilton Chicago and Tower.

Former Senator Dole has served as Senate Majority Leader, 1996 Republican presidential nominee, chairman of the Republican party, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, and is currently the national chairman of the National World War II Memorial Campaign, which is raising money to build the first national memorial dedicated to all who served during World War II.
The 2000 NAPSLO Annual Convention begins on Wednesday, September 13, with an Opening Reception, followed by an open day on Thursday, giving members a chance to network with other attendees. In addition to Sen. Dole's speech, Friday programs will feature a panel discussion on changes in technology and a recognition of individuals who have recently attained the Associate in Surplus Lines Insurance (ASLI) designation.
Saturday's program includes two panel discussions on the impact of consolidation and reorganization on insurance companies and agents, and the Annual Business Meeting where new officers and directors are elected. NAPSLO's current president is Tim Pedersen, President of Travis-Pedersen & Associates, Inc. of Chicago.
Background
The National Association of Professional Surplus Lines Offices (NAPSLO) is a national trade association representing the surplus lines insurance industry. Surplus lines is a specialized segment of the insurance business that is also referred to as non-admitted, specialty and/or excess lines. Risks are placed with the surplus lines market when they cannot be placed in the admitted/licensed market. NAPSLO represents surplus lines insurance agent/brokers and surplus lines companies. NAPSLO has over 1,200 member firm offices in the United States, Canada, and England.
The Foundation was established by the NAPSLO Board of Directors in 1991 to improve education for members of the insurance industry about the surplus lines industry. The Foundation has assisted in the creation of the ASLI designation program, established a scholarship program for students majoring in insurance or business, and since 1994 has annually commissioned the A.M. Best Co. to perform a solvency study of the surplus lines insurance. The A.M. Best reports have continually found the surplus lines industry's solvency record to be as good, if not better, than the overall property & casualty insurance industry.
