NAPSLO selects eight for summer intern program
Eight students were selected to participate in NAPSLO's 2003 Summer Internship Program. The interns spend five weeks with a NAPSLO member surplus lines insurance company and four weeks with a NAPSLO member wholesale broker/agent.
The 2003 NAPSLO Summer Interns are as follows:
Renae Burell, Castroville, Texas, a student at St. Mary's University. Her summer hosts are Essex Insurance Company,Glen Allen, Va., and Benchmark Management Group, Downers, Grove, Ill.
David Celetti, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, a student at Olivet College. His summer hosts are General Star IndemnityCompany, Chicago, and Westrope & Associates, Kansas City, Mo.
William Cromley, Brooklet, Ga., a student at The University of Georgia. His summer hosts are Markel SouthwestUnderwriters, Inc., Scottsdale, Ariz., and Quirk & Company, San Antonio.
Justin Griffith, Hueytown, Ala., a student at Troy State University. His summer hosts are Evanston Insurance Company, Deerfield, Ill., and CRC Insurance Services, Inc., Chicago.
Jonathan McKenzie, Foley, Ala., a student at Troy State University. His summer hosts are Scottsdale Insurance Co., Scottsdale, Ariz., and U.S. Risk Insurance Group, Inc., Dallas.
Hector Ortiz, New York, a student at St. John's University. His summer hosts are Colony Insurance Co., Richmond,Va., and Continental Agency of Florida, Boca Raton, Fla.
Michael Storer, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., a student at Olivet College. His summer hosts are Western World Insurance Group, Franklin Lakes, N.J., and Partners Specialty Group, LLC, Stamford, Conn.
Claire Wehrman, Lockwood, Mo., a student at Southwest Missouri State University. Her summer hosts are Great American Custom, Cincinnati, and Arlington/Roe & Co., Indianapolis.
NAPSLO interns rotate throughout different departments and learn about all facets of the excess and surplus lines insurance business. In addition to travel and housing costs, NAPSLO pays a stipend and the host firms pay a competitive salary.
The internship program was created in 1981 to attract new talent to the surplus lines insurance industry. Currently, NAPSLO has sponsored 148 interns, many of whom have been hired by NAPSLO member firms following graduation.
The 2004 application deadline will be January 15th. Additional information and an on-line application will be posted on the NAPSLO web site (www.napslo.org) in the fall. Interested students may contact NAPSLO to be put on a waiting list for the materials. In addition, many career services offices have the NAPSLO internship application and brochure.
Background
The National Association of Professional Surplus Lines Offices (NAPSLO) is a national trade association representing thesurplus lines insurance industry. Surplus lines is a segment of the specialty insurance business that is also referred to as nonadmitted,specialty and/or excess lines. Coverage for risks are placed with the surplus lines market when they cannot be placed with standard carriers in the admitted/licensed market. NAPSLO represents surplus lines insurance agent/brokers and surplus lines companies. NAPSLO has over 1,300 member firms in the United States, Canada, and England.
