Lloyd's of London Chairman, U.S. Historian to speak at 2003 NAPSLO Convention in San Diego

NAPSLO's 2003 Annual Convention, scheduled for the San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina September 10-14, will feature talks by Lloyd's of London Chairman Lord Peter Levene, historian Doris Kearns Goodwin and panels on the financial integrity of the industry and issues involving Federal and State regulation.

Lord Peter Levene, Chairman of Lloyd's of London, will speak to members on Saturday, September 13. As a former mayor of London (1998- 99) and private sector businessman, he is the first chairman of Lloyd's in its 314-year

history to be selected from outside the London-based insurance market. In addition to his duties as chairman of Lloyd's, Lord Levene is also a director of J. Sainsbury plc and has been Chairman of IFSL since 2000.

Also on Saturday, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Ph.D., presidential historian, will make the annual Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation Lecture Series presentation. Dr. Goodwin is the author of several New York Times

best sellers and received the 1995 Pulitzer Prize in History for No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front During World War II. She is currently working on a biography of President Lincoln.

The lecture series is a joint effort between NAPSLO and the Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation and features prominent individuals from business, government and the insurance industry who are invited to speak on current topics.

Programs on Friday include A View From the Top, a panel discussion on the financial integrity of the insurance industry, and The Federal Imperative vs. States Rights, a panel discussion on Federal and State issues such as reciprocity in licensing and tax allocation on multi state risks. In addition, new ASLI (Associate in Surplus Lines Insurance) designees will be recognized on Friday.

Members will vote on the slate of Officers and Directors during the annual business meeting on Saturday. The convention concludes with a closing reception Saturday evening.

Lord Levene Background

Lord Levene was educated at the City of London School and University of Manchester. He joined United Scientific Holdings in 1963, becoming chairman in 1981. In 1984 he joined the Civil Service, becoming personal advisor to the Secretary of State for the Defense, then Chief of Defense Procurement at the Ministry of Defense (1985 - 91). He was also the Prime Minister's advisor on Efficiency and Effectiveness (1992 - 97).

He was Chairman of the Docklands Light Railway Ltd. (1991-94), Chairman and Chief Executive of Canary WharfLtd. (1993-96), Director of Haymarket Publications Ltd. (1997 - ) and Chairman of Bankers Trust International from 1998 until the purchase by Deutsche Bank in 1999, and then became Vice-Chairman of Deutsche Bank AG London.

NAPSLO Background

The National Association of Professional Surplus Lines Offices NAPSLO) is a trade association representing the surplus lines insurance industry. Surplus Lines is a specialized segment of the insurance business that is also referred to as non-admitted, specialty and/or excess lines. Risks are placed with the surplus lines market when they cannot be placed in the admitted/licensed market.

NAPSLO represents surplus lines insurance agent/brokers and surplus lines companies. NAPSLO has over 1,200 member firms in the United States, Canada, and England.
