John Latham Presented NAPSLO’s Industry Award
October 21, 2009- John K. Latham, President of Markel, Southeast Region, Richmond, VA, was recently presented the Charles A. McAlear/NAPSLO Industry Award for his contributions to the surplus lines industry. Mr. Latham received the award during ceremonies at the 2009 NAPSLO Annual Convention in Orlando in early October.
The Industry Award was established by NAPSLO in the 1980s to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the surplus lines industry. The award was renamed in 1994 to recognize the Association's first president and founding member.
Mr. Latham has been active on the Board of Directors of both NAPSLO and the Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation, had been an instructor at the NAPSLO E&S School and served as NAPSLO President in 2000-01. Since serving as NAPSLO President, Mr. Latham served on the Foundation Board and in 2008 was named president of the newly formed Southeast Region of Markel Corporation.
Former NAPSLO President John Wood presented Mr. Latham the award and said Mr. Latham’s “work with NAPSLO and his leadership in the industry has made a profound mark on the E&S marketplace.”
In other awards, the Richard M. Bouhan Legislative Advocacy Award was presented to members of Continental/Marmorstein & Malone, Paramus, NJ recognizing Mary Ellen Rozzell, NAPSLO's president in 2007-08 and early advocate of NAPSLO’s legislative efforts at the national level. Following her untimely death earlier this year, Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ) and Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) recognized her efforts in the Congressional Record and members of the firm presented
NAPSLO copies of the resolutions.
The President’s Award was presented to Internship Committee co-chairs Gary Tiepelman and Steven Gross, and former NAPSLO President William Newton, who served as Chair of the Nominating Committee. Mr. Tiepelman is Senior Vice President of Underwriting for Scottsdale Insurance Co., Scottsdale, AZ, and Mr. Gross, who also served as Chair of NAPSLO's Career Awareness Committee, is Chairman and CEO of Metro Insurance Services, Inc., Springfield, NJ. Mr. Newton is President & CEO of RPS Los Angeles (Lemac & Associates).
The Dana Roehrig (Past President’s) Award was presented to Ed Levy, Vice President/Regional Mgr, West-Binding/Programs for Risk Placement Service, Scottsdale, AZ, for his work as a member of NAPSLO's Education Committee in helping establish the NAPSLO Executive Leadership School. The first school took place at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Businesses in February 2009.
Gerald Silver, who is retiring December 31 as Executive Director of the Surplus Lines Association of Arizona, was also recognized for his work in the surplus lines industry. He has been with the association for 11 years.
