The Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation sponsored symposiums presented by Troy University and Olivet College in 2009 and more than 160 students attended the events.
The Extreme Risk Takers Symposium presented by Olivet College
The "Extreme Risk Takers" Symposium of the Alpha Alpha Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma, under the direction of Olivet College Professor Mike Hubbel, took place in Chicago on March 27-28, 2009 and 86 students from 12 universities attended.
Industry speakers at the Olivet Symposium were: Tim Makowski, NAPSLO; Richard Bouhan, NAPSLO; Chris Behymer, Markel West Region; Barrett Hubbard, Markel Risk Solutions; Letha Heaton, Markel Corporation; John O’Hara & Mark Rector, Lloyd’s; Marcus Payne, All Risks.
In addition to the programs, students attended a Career Fair. Colleges represented at the symposium included: Appalachian State University; Baylor University; Cal State Fullerton; Illinois State University; Indiana State University; University of Iowa, University of Louisiana Lafayette; University of NCC; Olivet College; Virginia Commonwealth, and Fanshawe College of Canada.
The 2010 symposium is scheduled for March 26-27 in Chicago.
The Excess & Surplus Lines Symposium presented by Troy University
The Excess & Surplus Lines Symposium, presented by Troy University, was Nov. 21-22, 2009 in Birmingham, Ala. and 80 students from 11 universities attended the event, set up through Dr. Carol Jordan, Director of the insurance program at Troy’s Sorrell College of Business.
Speakers at the symposium were: Marcus Payne, NAPSLO; Richard Bouhan, NAPSLO; Patrick Talley, Lloyd’s of Kentucky, Inc.; Kaye Sheridan, Troy University; Alabama Insurance Commissioner Jim Ridling, Philip Adams, MacDuff Underwriters, Greg Rubel, Markel Mid South Region, Jonathan McKenzie, Cooper Gay Risk Services, Inc.; Brittany Thompson, RLI Insurance Co.

The 2010 symposium is set for October 8-9 in Birmingham, Ala.
