The Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation sponsored symposiums presented by Illinois State University and Troy University  and more than 160 students attended the events.


The Extreme Risk Takers Symposium Presented by Illinois State University

The Alpha Kappa Chapter at the Katie School of Insurance at Illinois State University hosted the Ninth Annual symposium March 30-31, 2012 at the Wyndham Hotel in downtown Chicago.  The symposium is an educational program sponsored by the Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation on the surplus lines insurance market that offers sessions and networking opportunities with your peers and industry professionals.

 

Some of the many topics covered in the 2012 symposium included:

  • Introduction to the NAPSLO Internship Program
  • An Update on Regulatory Activity
  • The Underwriting Cycle
  • Placing Risks in the E & S Market – Industry Panel

  • Paths to Success in the Surplus Lines Market – Industry Panel

 

The 2013 Risk Taker's Symposium will take place Friday and Saturday, March 22-23 at the Embassy Suites Chicago Downtown Lakefront.  Further details regarding the symposium will be posted as they become available.

 

Friday will include an overview of NAPSLO and the NAPSLO Internship Program, while Saturday’s program will include a variety of topics including: Intermediaries in the Surplus Lines Market, Regulation of the Surplus Lines Market, an industry panel on placing risks in the E&S market and Lloyd’s & the Global Market.  Networking opportunities in the form of meals and breaks will occur throughout the symposium.

 

The Excess & Surplus Lines Symposium Presented by Troy University
The Excess & Surplus Lines Symposium, presented by Troy University each fall  and a number of students from several universities attended the event, set up through Dr. Ed Pappanastos, Chair of the Division of Information Services and QM and a professor of Risk Management and Insurance, at the at Troy’s Sorrell College of Business.

 

The Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation-sponsored Excess & Surplus Lines Insurance Symposium & Career Fair took place October 12-13, 2012 and Troy University’s Risk Management & Insurance Program presented the annual event.  

The symposium featured presentations on topics such as NAPSLO career development opportunities through the Next Generation Group and Internship Program, as well as a broader exploration of the issues and challenges facing the insurance industry in general and surplus lines insurance in particular.  

Attendees were able to hear the perspectives of representatives like Marcus Payne (All Risks, Ltd.), Nick Abraham (Markel), Charles Angell (Alabama Department of Insurance), Pat Talley (Lloyd’s North America) and others.  The selection of speakers ensured that a variety of points of view were presented allowed for a thorough discuss of the excess & surplus lines insurance industry.  The symposium also featured a career fair and networking opportunities to allow students to begin building relationships to aid their transition to the professional world.
