NAPSLO Internship

The NAPSLO Internship Program annually awards paid summer internships to college students interested in an insurance career. Interns spend nine weeks with NAPSLO member firms learning all aspects of the surplus lines insurance industry.

Interns receive a competitive salary from their host firms and NAPSLO provides a stipend, covers travel, housing and various other related expenses. Interns also compete for additional internships in London and Bermuda that takes place the following summer.

Internship candidates are college juniors or seniors. The internship is open to Insurance, Risk Management and Actuarial Science majors only. Successful candidates must demonstrate an interest in an insurance career. A  brochure is available on-line for more information about NAPSLO's Internship program.

Selection Process
Applications for the Summer Internship Program are accepted annually from June 1 - December 1. Students can apply on-line  or download the application to send to NAPSLO. The deadline to submit completed application, current resume, college transcript, and letters of recommendation is December 1.

The committee reviews the applications and selects applicants for a telephone interview in January. Following that phase, personal interviews are then conducted on campus. Selected interns are announced by the end of March. Interns begin the internship at the beginning of the summer break.

Employment Opportunities
NAPSLO Interns and their hosts are listed each year in the NAPSLO News. Recent interns and their hosts are also listed on the NAPSLO web site.

NAPSLO is committed to helping successful interns find employment in the surplus lines industry.  Many interns often have employment opportunities lined up before completing the program. This is primarily as a result of the overall experience and networking opportunities available during the internship.

NAPSLO member firms interested in hiring a former intern may access Intern Resumes from this website. You will be asked to provide login and password.  Contact NAPSLO if you do not have this information.

Background Information
NAPSLO established the Internship Program in 1981 to interest students in the surplus lines industry, which handles unique, unusual, or hard to place risks. Since its inception more than150 students have participated in the program and over half of the former interns are currently working in the insurance industry and many are employed by NAPSLO member firms.

Students work five weeks for a NAPSLO member insurance company and four weeks with a NAPSLO member wholesale broker firm. Interns gain experience in all areas, including: underwriting, claims, accounting, marketing, and regulatory compliance.

Based on evaluations and recommendations from the host firms, selected interns are invited to attend the NAPSLO Annual Convention in the Fall. The interns are interviewed at the convention and one is selected as the Joseph H. Blades Memorial Scholar and receives an additional three-week internship in London the following summer.  The Bermuda Scholarship provides a second intern with an additional three-week internship in Bermuda the following summer.

In surveys of former participants, interns reported learning a great deal from the experience and many were later hired by NAPSLO members firms.
