Career Awareness & Internship Committees Merge
After two years, the Career Awareness Committee met its goals of establishing the Job Portal, promoting the Surplus Lines Industry to Colleges and creating a group of young leaders known as Next Generation. With the accomplishments that the CAC made the synergies created by joining with the Internship Committee was an easy decision. A number of goals have been established for the coming year to enhance the Internship program and increase awareness of surplus lines careers.
The Committee is in the process and will continue to arrange on-campus meetings to further the Career Awareness of the Surplus Lines Industry. A partnership with the National Association of Independent Insurance Adjusters was established this year and the number of schools being visited has increased considerably as a result of this alliance.
All of the interviews of the intern candidates to determine who will be selected for the 2010 summer internship have been completed and the committee will meet by conference call on February 25th to select the finalists.
The Committee also plans to spend more time mentoring both interns and hosts this year to ensure a smoother process for the program.
Two-person teams have been established in an effort to be more effective. Each team has the responsibility to mentor an intern and host as well as develop career awareness and contribute towards the revision of the Internship Review Booklet. The teams are also responsible to identify five insurance schools and recruit additional volunteers from Next Generation and the general membership to visit and teach how to present a career in surplus lines to universities. In conjunction with the NAIIA a presentation in claims careers is offered as well.
Two teams have been specifically assigned to expand, promote and enhance the NAPSLO job portal to display not only career opportunities, but also internship postings as well. Another goal is to post resumes of any students looking for jobs and increase exposure by advertising to trade journals and colleges. The committee encourages members to post jobs on the portal. This is a free service for members and should you wish to post a job position please contact Jennifer Hague at the NAPSLO office or visit the job portal at jobs.napslo.org
